Before You Pay · the rule, in plain words

5 things I wish I knew before I paid my hospital bill.

The first bill is a summary. Ask for the itemized statement with the codes, every line and every charge. The paper from your insurance that says "this is not a bill" is the answer key: it shows what your plan allowed and what is left for you. The hospital already published its prices. A nonprofit hospital has to have a financial assistance policy, and you can ask to be screened for it. And nothing bad happens while you ask questions.

This is the general rule, in plain words. BillFighter is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. If you have been served with court papers, that is the day for a lawyer or legal aid.
