Before You Pay · the rule, in plain words

“Apply for financial assistance?” Yes. Before there’s a bill.

A nonprofit hospital has to have a written financial assistance policy, and it has to tell you about it. You can ask for the application before the visit, at the visit, or after the bill arrives. The income limits are often higher than people assume, and most hospitals also have a hardship application that looks at the size of the bill, not only income. For-profit hospitals aren’t required to have a policy — ask anyway. Not sure whether your hospital is nonprofit? Read this first.

Already have the bill? Upload it; BillFighter prepares the financial-assistance application. The hospital decides.

The check is free. The letter is the paid part: you print and mail it yourself, or we send it by certified mail for you. No account needed to start.

This is the general rule, in plain words. BillFighter is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. If you have been served with court papers, that is the day for a lawyer or legal aid.
